McFarland Middle School (Othello)
McFarland Middle School in Othello, WA, consists of 736 students from grades 6-8. They are the second largest 2A school in the state of Washington. In an interview with their band director, William Lutey, I discussed the unique context of their music department. Their band operates within the seventh and eighth graders, serving approximately 150 students. The school is situated in a high-agriculture area, with a significant Hispanic population (95%). Many of these families have strong ties to the agriculture industry. Notably, they have major agricultural plants like McCain’s and Simplot in the region, which employ a large number of workers. Despite facing challenges such as high poverty rates and homelessness, they ensure that every student receives a free and reduced school lunch. Delivering these instruments had a major impact not only for the school, but for the students themselves, as Mr. Lutey stated, “new instruments means I can get more students who want to be in the program. Nothing's worse than having to tell the counselor I know the student really wants to be in this class, but I don't have an instrument for them to play, and so a new instrument means an opportunity that can change a kid's life. I look at a new instrument as a chance to impact a kid's life in a positive way forever.”
